Retiree Continuation Coverage

Employees who officially retire under the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) after January 1, 1994, may continue medical insurance benefits at retirement.  The employee must elect to continue medical coverage no later than the day on which the employee retires.  The employee may elect to continue coverage for dependents covered under the health plan on the day the employee elects coverage continuation.  A dependent not covered under the plan on the date the employee leaves municipal employment may not be covered under the plan.  A spouse may be added with a change in family status as long as they had not previously termed from coverage on the retiree plan.  If the retiree discontinues coverage after the initial election, the retiree is no longer eligible for coverage.
